Whether you are looking for a new position, or looking to advance within the company that you are at now, you will be asked “why are you looking for a new position”.
This requires thought, you want to be able to express your reasons in a professional way so that the person you are talking to understands your reasons.
You may be looking for a new position because you need to make more money. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make more money, make sure that your reasons go beyond just making more money.
This kind of response will raise a red flag with hiring managers, the thought process for this would be “ what happens if I hire this person and a year from now decides that they need to make more money again, will they leave”
Companies today invest in their employees with training and guidance and they do not want to think that the only reason this person is here is because we are paying them more than what they were making at their other job.
You may want to change careers, a good reason to look for a new position and a good response, letting a hiring manager know that you want to increase your knowledge and skills and be part of a company that can give you that shows that you are willing to take the necessary steps to do that, sometimes this may mean that a cut in pay is required.
You may like where you are working but want to improve your skills and by doing so you can contribute more to the company. This shows that you want to invest your time and skills in the company and that you are willing to go beyond what is required of you.
Whatever your reason is, make sure that you think about the reasons and that your response is professional and sincere.
