GIVING A TWO WEEK NOTICE

Bob Mitchell

Giving a notice to your manager is always stressful, especially if you like working with your manager but you know that you want to go in a different direction.

The best way to give a notice is to have it written down.  Set a meeting with your manager and prepare yourself for what will follow.

Make sure that you haven’t said anything in your written notice that will raise an eyebrow.  You don’t want to burn any bridges with the company you are leaving, you may need that manager for a reference.

Explain your reasons clearly in writing and verbally when you meet with your manager.  Your reasons are important to you and you need to make sure that your manager understands this.

You want to leave on good terms because you may find out that where you are going was not what you thought it would be.

Having negative responses about the people you work with will prompt the manager to ask you why you didn’t bring this up earlier and you will struggle to come up with a reason.

Be open and honest about why you are leaving and end your meeting with the hopes of staying in contact and you may find that down the road that manager may be able to help you, or you may be able to help them.
